The last name is probably Russian, but many American Jews come from Russian or Polish Jewish émigré communities, and thus have versions of Russian or other Eastern European names that Americans have now come to think of as Jewish (even though many are not). But to a Middle Easterner, it would simply be another Slavic last name.

My family is Slavic, and I knew immediately that his last name was probably Russian Jewish. Depends on how the name translates.
