Back in the day (now I only fly business or first class), when someone would recline into my space, odd, I would all of a sudden have sneezing fits. . .don’t know why, must be allergies to the shampoo of the person reclining into my space (that was my story). . .anyway, a few hacks of sneeze blowing in their hair, followed by loud sniffling makes them quickly stop reclining.
Why is there a sudden spat of these incidents or is it only that the media is reporting them, I wonder?

I guess up to a certain height or size you can pretend you have some personal space. I’m not a giant guy, but I long ago gave up any pretense that the area in front of me was of much use to me at all. It’s not enough space for me to lean forward and put my head on the table to try to sleep; it’s not even enough space for me to be able to lean forward and pick up something from the floor by my feet.
Seating is cramped. Seats recline. Shut up.

And the airlines solution is to punish the passengers involved instead of looking at the reason this has become an issue … seats are too darn close to each other. There’s no room for reclining seats anymore.
Women throwing their drinks at passengers. Women demanding that the plane land immediately.
“Yes, Ma’am, you pushed the attendant call button?”
“Yes. Throw this man off the plane.”
“Did he bother you?”
“No. I don’t like him. Throw him off the airplane and don’t give him a parachute. You can give him one of those little bags of nuts, but that’s it.”

“OK. Come on, buddy. Off the plane you go.”
Given how airlines have turned coach into the cattle cars of the air, everyone just needs to realize and accept that whatever flight you are on is going to be a miserable, claustrophobic, uncomfortable experience unless you are 5 feet tall and weigh 120 lbs, or unless you upgrade to first class or business.

I call bs - we aren't hearing the whole story
I got into a seat (one of the few times I flew coach) and found that the seat wouldn’t go back. I got up to look and saw those insipid things in the tray table arms. I asked the dude to remove them and got a big diatribe about his rights and his legroom and me being inconsiderate and violation his rights that I wearied of quickly and took my seat, with the offended person continuing his speech—knowing that pasting this guy in the mouth wouldn’t go over well.
Once we leveled off at 30-thousand whatever feet, I braced my feet on the chair mounting in front of me, pressed the button, and gave a good hard push. The knee defenders creaked, creaked, one split and very quickly the other one gave way as well. So much for “unbreakable”.
The offended guy was absolutely furious, called the FA, demanded that I be arrested and was told by the flight crew to sit down and be quiet or HE would be the one arrested—they are an unauthorized seat modification that he was neither trained to install (asked if he had an A&P ticket—he didn’t) nor given permission by the airline to install them.
After 3-1/2 hours Houston to Las Vegas he started his verbal beratement all the way until we were parked and the rows in front of us cleared. An FA pulled me aside, told the other guy to continue on his way, and once was out of earshot, asked how I got enough force to break those. I explained, showed how simple it was and the FA had a good laugh and thanked me for showing me how it worked. Seems he’s had several of those incidents and now knew how to advise pax how to fight back without a word. And yes, that really is an unauthorized modification.

Could someone explain to me why the reclining seats are such a problem? Every time I’ve flown (in steerage), I note the seats recline only about two inches. How can that two inches inconvenience anyone?
If reclining seats are such a bad idea, why do they recline? All planes, all airlines.
Bottom line you pay for x amount of space.. if the person in front reclines you lose part of that space.. that you can only gain back if you also recline.. and take space from the person behind you...
The airlines created this conflict and it’s up to them to solve it… here are some ‘technical solutions for them…
- Just make all seats so that they don’t recline.
- Come up with a new seat design that reclines but doesn’t change the leg space for the person behind. This isn’t actually all that hard to do but it will involve completely new seats of a different type (ones that rotate as opposed to just a seatback laying back).
- Come up with an interlock system whereby the person who wants to recline has to have their seat cooperatively released by the person behind. This adds a layer of complexity that the airlines probably don’t want but it avoids the conflict by having both parties involved…. If this was done, there would have to be announcement that explained it all to the passengers during the “here’s how your seat belt works” announcements. Something like this…. “If you are in a seat that reclines, please be aware that the person behind you may not want you to recline… you can ask them to release your seat but if they don’t want it released for whatever reason, your seat won’t be able to recline and please respect their decision. For those of you who don’t care if the seat ahead of you is reclined, you can push the release button now so that the party ahead of you can recline if they so choose. Oh and for those of you who attempt to recline your seat, this automatically releases the seat ahead of you for recline.

As one how works on a laptop on virtually every flight and almost invariably has to put it away when a seat is released ahead of me, I frankly like the attention that this issue is being given and I hope the airlines pay attention and come up with a solution that works. I had one instances where my laptop was ‘pinched in’ when the seatback ahead reclined and when the person wouldn’t move forward to release my trapped computer, a FA had to be called. Regardless, given that airlines like to do things on the cheap, I suspect that what will happen is that they will just make all seats inoperable for anyone to recline. Some airlines have already done that.
