According to Wikipedia, a dunum is 1,000 square meters or about 0.247 acres, so 4,000 dunums would be about 1,000 acres.

This all goes back to Ottoman practice. Things would be simpler if the Turks had just used acres.

which measurement is more objective?

1) 1 dunam = 40 paces square
2) 1 acre = amount of land which could be ploughed in 1 day.

So a dunum is a tenth of a hectare. I never knew that.
