So I asked the next five Americanists I ran into and received a bit more confirmation: three gave solid endorsements of the speaker, one gave a lukewarm endorsement and one was much less enthusiastic.

Let’s see. In the 90s, the had significant budget changes, passed significant welfare reform. Lowered taxes, including a reform of capital gains. Directly after those achievements, we had massive impressive economic growth. All with a politically savvy Democrat president.
Since 2010, we’ve had tax increases, zero oversight, military cuts galore and a confusing series of pointless negotiations with little results. Politically, they failed to pin the gridlock on Harry Reid while they blocked any and every bill out of the House, and they allowed the narrative to change from a failed president with bad policies to a failed congress that can’t function.
Policy-wise, it has been a failure, and politically it’s been a disaster.
