MADISON, Wis. -- Prosecutors on Friday charged a former Wisconsin sheriff's deputy suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease with shooting his wife and sister-in-law to death this month.

Former Dane County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Steele, 39, faces two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his wife, Ashlee Steele, and his sister-in-law, Kacee Tollefsbol of Lake Elmo, Minn. He would get two mandatory life sentences if he's convicted.

Prosecutors have not offered a motive for the slayings. Steele's lawyer, Jessa Nicholson, said during a court hearing Friday that she plans to investigate Steele's mental stability.

She appeared with Steele via video from the Rock County jail, where Steele is being held because of his close relationship with Dane County jailers.

Several possibilities come to mind.None of which excuse two murders under American law.

A badly-phrased headline. Nobody should be immortalized as “... her Lake Elmo sister.”

Receipts and surveillance video from a Madison store showed Andrew Steele purchasing two 8-pound bags of charcoal and lighter fluid

Not very 'Green'. He should have started the fire with a charcoal chimney and newspaper.

That’s what it sounds like. Maybe the sister-in-law saved the children from whatever he’d planned by living long enough to call the police.

This also makes me wonder, as I our society grows more to resemble suicide cults such as Islam or traditional Japan, will there be more situations of people who decide that, since they don’t want to live any longer, neither should any of their family members?

I may be mistaken, but reading between the lines, one could surmise that he'd decided to kill himself, and his wife and her sister tried to stop him or talk him out of it. So he killed them.

Despicable.
