A man infected with Ebola traveled to Senegal, becoming the first recorded in this country of an outbreak that has hit four other West African countries and has killed more than 1,500 people, the Ministry of Health said Friday.

The infected person is a university student from Guinea who sought treatment at a hospital in Senegal's capital, Dakar, this week, Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters. The young man said he had had contact with Ebola patients while he was in Guinea and was immediately put under quarantine, she said.

Tests from the Institut Pasteur have confirmed that he has Ebola, and the World Health Organization has been alerted.

How many people did he touch, how many surfaces that have hands on them did he get live ebola virus on? Was he coughing a lot? Was he on an airplane coughing a lot while the air circulates? Did he sneeze on any handrails? Who did he come into contact with?

How many other people are out there doing the same thing?

I’m going to have to look, but I think Senegal closed its borders with Guinea prior to this. If so, this is a case of border hopping.

Corruption is endemic in Africa. This is one of the big ways Ebola will travel from here to there. In spite of the lip service of this or that travel restriction.

“I wonder how far this will spread?”

I predict the first case in the US will be in El Paso.

"Forty percent of infections included in the current tally occurred within the past three weeks, according to the WHO. And the virus has mutated during the outbreak, which could hinder diagnosis and treatment of the disease, according to scientists who genetically sequenced the virus in scores of victims."

My prediction .... it’s going to be outside of Africa before much longer ..... I’d guess India. Won’t that be a “cluster”?

If India gets it, we’ll certainly get it. The amount of travel is huge and enough Indians can and are able to get here for treatment.

If I was in India and I had an outbreak on my street, the risk of exposure would make me flee to a country with top tier healthcare under the hopes that once I arrived I could be properly cared for.

Nope...Nogales area or Douglas, AZ....maybe even Fort Huachuca.

Either that or Brownsville/McAllen via Matomoros, Meckhicko.

I disagree with both. First case of Ebola will be diagnosed in Monett, Missouri.

If Ebola reaches India, it will be in Las Vegas in 72 hours...Avoid the Mandalay Bay if that happens.

I was originally going to say Chicago. But that seemed disingenuous.

He was under observation because of prior contact with ebola patients.

He was not forthcoming with this information to the Senegalese authorities.

Read THIS one and think about it if you’re in a crowded emergency room over the coming months and the guy next to you looks like he’s got a bad case of the flu...

The coughing would not be a factor, since Ebola spreads by droplets, but not aerosols. You would need to be within about 6 feet for droplets to reach you.

This guy would not have been infectious before he showed symptoms. Hopefully, all of his contacts since he became symptomatic can be traced and monitored.
