On Tuesday, the Sheboygan Press reported that according to two veteran GOP consultants that talk radio and campaign cash were to blame for State Senator Joe Leibhams narrow defeat in the 6th Congressional District Republican primary.
Jason Smathers, the author of the article, said: But with two other state legislators running to his right, those advantages disappeared. Leibham played defense most of the race. He was blasted in attack ads and press releases and lost to his main opponents in all but two counties Manitowoc and his home of Sheboygan.
Smathers interviewed veteran GOP consultant Mark Graul of Arena Strategy Group who attributed talk radio and money as the main reasons for Leibhams defeat. Graul also said that the wide but compact geography of the district made it very difficult for any one candidate to maintain a strong competitive advantage citing that the district is in the Green Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee media markets. In the final days leading up before the August 12th statewide primary, WTMJ Radios Charlie Sykes endorsed Grothman along with WISN Radios Jay Weber.
GOP strategist and lobbyist Brandon Scholz said that Grothmans win was a reflection of his work ethic and had similar shades to his 2004 victory to the 20th District State Senate seat against Mary Panzer. He told the newspaper: Hes relentless, hes detailed, hell work harder than most people and he doesnt take time off.
Grothman officially defeated Leibham last Friday by 219 votes after official canvassing declared him the winner.
Sheboygan Press blames talk radio for Leibham’s Primary loss.

“How about the will of the voters? And the fact that Grothman is a tireless campaigner and a tireless legislator.”
Nawwwwwww. THAT can’t be it.
Have you ever heard of anyone walking in that many parades? One day, I think there were 4 or 5? I get tired thinking about that.
When I saw Glenn on Sunday, I thought that he looked slim and trim. That is probably the reason — all those parades.
