Life Under IS in Mosul

A Mosul citizen has told BasNews about life in Mosul under control of the Islamic State (IS) militants.

The citizen, 23-years-old, wanted to remain anonymous for reasons of safety. He talked about public services in Mosul, “There are no services left in the city, especially now that the federal government of Iraq has cut electricity to the city. Oil and gas are both hard to come by and have become very expensive in the bazaar. The quality is extremely bad.”

He noted that there is little food and what there is is expensive.

The source resides in the Zanko neighborhood of Mosul. He revealed that government employees’ have not received their salaries and they remain without work.

In regards to the freedom of the residents, he said, “We have freedom of work and nobody hinders us, but on the other hand, nargila and smoking are now forbidden completely.”

“Everyone is hungry and there is a lack of fuel. Cars’ tanks are empty. The price of a litre of fuel has increased by about IQD 2,000. Thus, even if somebody works, he or she won’t earn enough to get by,” said the source.

According to him, IS insurgents in the city often ask residents to take up arms and join IS sometimes forcing them to do so.

He mentioned that women in the city are only allowed to wear certain dresses to go outside as well as a shawl. If a woman violates these rules, the woman’s husband will be punished. Sometimes this punishment includes the woman and her other relatives as well.

The source also confirmed the news about the selling of Kurdish Yazidi women by IS  and said, “In Mosul, Yazidi women get sold by the IS militants with their price based on their age, face, and looks in general.”

He also added that: “If someone leaves their neighbourhood, they have to inform the IS where they will be going and how much time they need to get back to home.”

“In Mosul, Yazidi women get sold by the IS militants with their price based on their age, face, and looks in general.”

Waiting for the condemnation by the UN, the EU, and demonstrations by feminists worldwide... (maybe they’re too busy condemning Israel for Gaza...)

Enjoy it. Get up every morning and breath it in. Lie on the ground and roll around in it. This is the future, a boot stomping on a human face forever. I don’t care about any sunni suffering under ISIS.
