Good question. Perhaps the family or his employer paid?? The article states he was turned over to the United Nations.

Pretty bad PR...
Nusra Front, the Qaeda affiliate in Syria needs funding unlike ISIS who just steal Iraqi assets like oil..
Maybe they don't want to be seem as complete barbarians if they want continued help to overthrew Assad...
