Are we Ferguson?
CNN Opinion ^ | August 21, 2014 | Professor John Inazu

Posted on 08/21/2014 5:59:57 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

We all know the slogans meant to express empathy and solidarity: "We are Columbine." "We are all New Yorkers." "I am Trayvon Martin." The "We are Ferguson" messages have already begun, and we will likely see more.

The well-intended connections seldom work. Most of us are not Columbine because most of us did not lose children in our community in a high school mass shooting. We are not all New Yorkers because only some of us experienced the aftermath of 9/11 at Ground Zero. I am not Trayvon Martin because I am not a black male.

Are we Ferguson? That's a harder question.

Ferguson has a median household income of $36,645 and an unemployment rate topping 13%. And as the world now knows, Ferguson's overwhelmingly white police force arrests blacks at a pace nearly four times higher than whites. On the other hand, although you wouldn't know it from most of the news coverage, Ferguson is also one of the most racially integrated municipalities in Missouri. It includes not only working-class blacks and white professionals, but also black professionals and working-class whites. And many of Ferguson's residents bridge racial and socioeconomic lines in their neighborhoods.

With all of its complexities, Ferguson does not sound like my world.

I teach at Washington University, where most of my colleagues and students are white. I shop at mostly white places that feel safe and convenient. Most of the contentious issues in my mostly white neighborhood are about bike paths and trees. Many of you live in my world.

It would be easy for those in my world to say we are not Ferguson. But highlighting our differences misses something important: We are part of the reason for the circumstances that it confronts today. We may not be Ferguson, but we helped make Ferguson....

“I teach at Washington University, where most of my colleagues and students are white. I shop at mostly white places that feel safe and convenient. Most of the contentious issues in my mostly white neighborhood are about bike paths and trees. Many of you live in my world.”

Then why don’t you take your racial guilt, Professor, and “diversify” inner city St Louis? Funny how y’all hide behind other white people while you lecture the rest of us about race matters.

Practice what you preach, Brother. Take your family and your white friends who “think’ like you do and bring your superior attitudes, finances and resources into the areas which you think are getting such a raw deal. Let’s see how well you do and how long you last.

Then maybe you might understand why the Michael Browns and his parents, and the politicians they support, are the problem

Why yes! Yes, we are!

Because we are all vulnerable to the media lies and distortions that made Saint Charging Bull possible.

Ferguson's overwhelmingly white police force arrests blacks at a pace nearly four times higher than whites

Well, perhaps blacks commit an overwhelmingly higher percentage of crimes than whites. The fact that the police force arrests more blacks than whites means nothing in the absence of other data.

And why does it matter that the police force is 'overwhelmingly white'? Shouldn't it only be important that they are American citizens, and competent to do the job?
Where do you stop slicing the divisions? If the skin color matters - where do you stop? Cocoa colored? Dark black? Pinkish? Tan? Is 'White' defined as having 100% of your parents, and grandparents, and great-grandparents from Western Europe Extraction? Or is there a different ratio required? How about 'Black'? You must have both your parents and grandparents be of Western Africa extraction? What if there was a white person, or Hispanic, in the mix? Do they now count as 'coffee'?

Just leave it as American. Citizen. And Competent. Three categories, by the way, which I don't believe the current 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue occupant actually meets.

Stuff it, professor. I'm not the least interested in the issue of race unless someone threatens to burn my house down in a race riot.

White racism is not a major problem. Its not even a minor problem.

Black racism is a far more dangerous issue.

Democrats whipping up race hate in order to motivate voters, however, is a HUGE problem.

What a bunch of tripe. Get the hip boots, the BS is getting deep.

Saying it again. Most of the citizens of Ferguson are staying at home like any sensible person should. Many of those on the streets are not even from Ferguson.

Arsonists, Molotov cocktail and urine bottle throwers, looters and miscreant behavior is NOT an example of a peaceful demonstrator.

When the biggest killer of black people is other black people and women pregnant with black babies, that is a black culture problem, that I had nothing to do with.

This professor can go sell his crap sandwich elsewhere-I ain't biting.

Ferguson does not have any easy solutions. But we need to begin by talking about the problems in a more honest and self-reflective way. We need to start having the tough conversations that many of us too often avoid out of fear, ignorance or inconvenience.

The guy who wrote this is a gullible white liberal elite who thinks the solution is for all of us white people to sit and listen to all the Kunta Kintes in 'the community'... Strangely it's the exact same solution liberal elites have been pushing for almost 50 years. I'm sure the results will be different this time.../s
