"with the potential to tear the social fabric along predictably ideological lines." Not true. There are plenty of conservatives (excepting the Brown shooting) who are generally concerned with the militarization, capriciousness, abuse and lack of accountability of the police.
I wish they would enforce the law against criminals and investigate crime.
But in my 52 years of experience, they don't do that. They only jack up average citizens attempting to legally go about their day to raise revenue for the welfare state.

"Clearly, death is an excessive and unwarranted punishment for the crime of selling loose cigarettes" This death is on the hands of the tax and spend nanny state and its "Sin Taxes", without which this man would not have an opportunity to sell black market cigarettes. He might be a shopkeeper selling untaxed and unregulated cigarettes.

Why does Hennessey see to need to run interference for Obama?

Think: Constable.
That’s the role I want for ‘police officers’.
Not a domestic combat force with military equipment acting on behalf of the state to intimidate and terrorize John Q. Public and acting as a revenue enforcer for the Mob.

True Story: New Year's Eve, 1960 - my Dad and two neighbors had been drinking and decided to fire off the 12 gauge at midnight. The local cop shows up and asks for the shotgun - the man holding it says, "No way, I'm giving to the owner." and hands it to my Dad. The officer then asks if they would go back inside and they did, with the cop saying thanks and leaving.
Nowadays that would bring a tank and swat team, and probably air support.
