Real twinkles back in the day had cane sugar. Newer version of twinkles (and most of the junk food we remember well) have been using high fructose corn syrup for decades now. There is a huge difference in flavor. The HFC almost seems to suppress flavor.

That explains it. I should have just read the label and saved a dollar.
(The cartoons were way better then, too.)
