Frances Robles has covered South Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America for two decades. In 2013, she joined the New York Times, where she spent several months in New York City, uncovering a pattern of wrongful convictions that led to a sweeping investigation and won a George Polk award for justice reporting.

In 2014, she began her post in Miami, where her assignment is to cover Florida for the National Desk and Central America and the Caribbean for the international desk.

She previously spent 19 years at the Miami Herald, where her coverage ranged from Hugo Chavez’s cancer, baseball in Santo Domingo to the plight of critically ill children in quake-ravaged Haiti. She’s covered government collapses in four countries, a civil war and specializes in social justice issues. Robles spent six years covering Cuba, including Fidel Castro’s historic resignation and the island’s government transition.

She was the Miami Herald’s lead reporter on the Trayvon Martin case.

The paper’s former Nicaragua-based Central America correspondent, she also served as bureau chief in Bogotá, Colombia where she covered the civil conflict and interviewed war lords. She started at the Herald in 1993 covering higher education, and later moved on to writing about crime and courts. Her first job was covering suburban schools for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland.

Robles has been a member of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams and was a finalist for two more.

A native New Yorker who graduated from NYU, she was a 2004-2005 John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University. A lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, she was the programming chair for the 2011 and 2009 national conventions and most recently was the social media director for the South Florida chapter.

“She was the Miami Herald’s lead reporter on the Trayvon Martin case.”

No doubt, she’s already blocked out time in 2016 for the next election year coverage of a white person killing a black person.

2012 Election year - Saint Trayvon

2014 Election year - Saint Michael

2016 Election year - Saint (fill in black name)
