We’re turning into a country of 5 year olds. Let’s dump water on our heads and laugh at how funny it looks. Sure, donating to help treat ALS is a great cause, but who thinks up this sort of mindlessness?
As someone who’s similarly afflicted (not full-blown ALS), I can’t say I ever cared for this show-boating method to raise funds & “awareness” towards these illnesses. ALS in particular is a very brutal disease, and takes a heavy toll not only on the patient but the caregivers and support structure as well.
I suppose the sentiment is there, but to my mind it would be better if people would just contribute from their heart, and the MDA would try to target the money wisely. They regularly run this hokey promotion called a Lock-Up, where politicians & prominent public figures are put in “jail” based on contributions I would rather see the lawbreakers in Gov’t genuinely incarcerated
My reaction: "This is so damn gay I wish I never heard about it."
With great respect I think this is a fantastic idea. The amount of money raised by this has been extraordinary, and ALS research will be the beneficiary. Most people don’t even know it was started by people in Boston to do something to help former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates. My niece’s father will likely not live until Christmas because of this dreadful disease. Sometimes the methods are strange but the message is getting through.
I agree. Also, it’s not enough to quietly do good any more. People have to make sure everyone knows how wonderful they are. I really hate Parade Magazine’s “make a difference day”. People make a difference every day by doing their jobs and taking care of their families.
