Police have used questionable tactics in Ferguson, Missouri, to quell riots in the wake of a cop shooting and killing a black, unarmed 18-year-old, from arresting journalists to using tear gas on peaceful protesters to bringing barking police dogs into the streets.
"Using dogs on a crowd in a civil disturbance has been a no-no in policing since Selma, Alabama," former police chief Chuck Drago told Business Insider, referring to bloody civil rights protests in 1965. "It doesn't look good. It's a PR nightmare if nothing else, and it just stirs people up."
Tensions between Ferguson cops and Ferguson residents actually started long before the shooting death last weekend of Michael Brown days before he was supposed to start college. The city is 67% black, but only three out of 53 police officers in the city are African-American, The New York Times notes. There is evidence of racial profiling in the city, as The Times notes that blacks account for 87% of traffic stops in Ferguson.

If I was a cop I’d be wearing African garb at the hearings.
A Former Police Chief Explains All The Ways The Entitlement Mentality, No Fathers and Race Pimping In Ferguson Made A Bad Situation Worse
Police chiefs are like Military Generals: they go into politics and take both sides.
How about this — allow the victims of the rioting to defend them with deadly force if necessary?
Heck, if the police are not allowed to do it, then at least let the people defend themselves.
Of course, it may not turn out well with people shooting at each other.
Erin Fuchs up and goes with the “Whites-are-racist-Blacks-are-victims” apologists for this article.
no, sounds like the Ferguson chief is living back in the 50s
I wonder what this guy would wear to an expected confrontation with people who have been tossing bricks through storefronts for several days? Bermuda shorts, flippers, and goggles?
No not everyone out there was a rioter. One the other hand you won’t convince none of them were. The potential for violence and more rioting was undeniably there.
Riot gear? Well duh. If this wouldn’t be a situation for that, what would be?
Racial profiling? The population is two thirds black. Twenty percent over that is not evidence of racial profiling. Racial profiling is. Unless it can be proven that whites are not pulled over for the same infractions, there’s no clear cut profiling going on. Numbers alone are proof of nothing.
I’m so sick of race baiting.
Since you obviously agree with the leftists thugs of Ferguson, it is not surprising that you posted this. Have you sent in your donation to St. Michael Brown’s family yet?
The 50’s? Yeah, like that’s a bad thing.
And an accordion. One does not simply walk into a riot without an accordion...
Only three out of 53 are African American, but how many are black? (Since a distinction is made in the quoted sentence.)
All brains have turned off here the last 5 days.
“Using dogs on a crowd in a civil disturbance has been a no-no in policing since Selma, Alabama,” former police chief Chuck Drago told Business
And why is that?
Because it was one of the most effective things to do. Can’t have something that worked but was considered non PC..
No idea. Maybe Dave Barry?
So what? there are plenty of white population towns that elect black mayors; you don't see them acting like a bunch of fools just because their mayor or sheriff is black.
Looks to me like the feds may have been the source of many problems in Ferguson. (aside from the obvious looting and rioting) They were on the ground within hours. They didn’t want the video of the little boy committing his strong arm robbery released, and they apparently encouraged the locals to try to silence the media.
I watched this LIVE, and it was only the police dogs who kept it from getting violent. The crowd kept pushing the cops further back and a physical conflict was imminent. It could have gotten really bad. Out came the dogs and the crowd retreated.
As far as I can tell, the Ferguson Police have been making all the right moves. There have been very limited injuries, other than ones done by the rioters.
