New applications for unemployment benefits rose last week but remained near eight-year lows.
Initial claims for unemployment benefits increased by 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 311,000 in the week ended Aug. 9, the Labor Department said Thursday. That was more than the 295,000 new claims forecast by economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and the highest level since June.
Claims for the previous week were revised up slightly to 290,000.
Applications for unemployment benefits, a proxy for layoffs, have been trending lower this year. The four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out weekly volatility, increased by 2,000 to 295,750, but that was still well below the average level of claims last year.

It’s fun with Thursday jobless claim numbers once again...

“But Remain Near Eight-Year Lows:” with Obama as President, there’s nothing but silver linings everywhere.
Listen to the press, they don’t lie - things are just wonderful and all those 20-somethings that can’t find even menial jobs just want to extend their childhoods and live home with their parents, which brings families together and that is a real good thing. Thank you, Obama policies!
The problem is, of course, that these “lows” are still very high.
Yahoo says that despite the rise this will “probably do little to change views that the labor market was strengthening.” The left wing media propaganda machine rushes to find a silver lining in every one of Obama’s dark clouds.
Which “Recovery Summer” are we at now? Is it 5.0?
only when a democrat is president are these numbers good...
Check the London papers (which are ten thousand times more honest than the trash that calls itself “news” in the US). Europe, including Germany, is seeing stalled growth and is on the verge of going back into recession - if so, the US ain’t far behind.
We never got out of the recession.
This government is about as truthful on the economy as Pravda was about the Soviet economy.
Yes, I was aware of that thanks to ZeroHedge which provides another perspective on economic news. Our media is so full of propaganda that its nearly worthless.
The government and its wholly owned subsidiary, the U.S. media, don’t like to talk about the dismal labor participation rate, the U6 report (on the real unemployment numbers), or anything else that doesn’t support the administration’s narrative. The information out of this government and so-called “news” have become a stream of propaganda and deceit.
I love the headline on CNBC: Weekly claims at 311,000.
No mention that they’re up or increased. Just ho hum. 311. Move along. LOL!
Obama&Co motto still in operation ALL PAIN NO GAIN.
Yahoo and Reuters doing their usual job of propping up the regime.
