The convictions in the scandalous rigged hiring practices at the state Probation Department have given Republican Charlie Baker a clear road to the governor's office.

It only remains to be seen if Baker is willing to go down the road, or whether it will be the road not taken.

Forget the polls. For now, they do not mean much, as far as Baker is concerned. He is expected to easily prevail over tea-party challenger Mark Fisher in the September Republican primary.
