The May 2014 EU election saw the lowest voter turnout on record, according to updated figures discreetly released by the European Parliament during the summer holiday period for EU institutions.
The updated numbers, published on the Parliament website, show that turnout struggled to reach 42.54% in 2014, well below the 43.1% initially announced.
Diplomatic pencils will be being snapped in despair at the lowest public enthusiasm for an EU poll since 1979, when elections were first held.
The tweaked figures will also come as an embarrassment for EU officials who had hailed the results of the 2014 poll for finally reversing a trend of declining voter engagement with EU polls.

Voters everywhere have a reason to be demoralized.
I sat and watched the entire EU election from here in Europe. Basically, there was no central theme for any of the parties running or candidates making speeches. It was an election....as Seinfeld would say...about “nothing”. Voters, I figure ninety percent of them....basically could not cite a single detail of why they were voting for their party except they were liberal or middle-of-the-road or conservative. Even the newspapers stayed out of the talk, making no issue public over who you voted for or against.
So why would you expect anything other than a very low turn-out?
When the voting trend is not in the favor of those in power, the numbers of votes mysteriously is much, much lower.
