In a statement released today, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that West Africa's Ebola epidemic is an "extraordinary event" and now constitutes an international health risk.

"A coordinated international response is deemed essential to stop and reverse the international spread of Ebola," the WHO said in a statement after a two-day meeting of its emergency committee on Ebola.

MSF reaction to WHO Ebola statement

In response, Dr Bart Janssens, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Director of Operations said:

“Declaring Ebola an international public health emergency shows how seriously WHO is taking the current outbreak but statements won’t save lives

“Now we need this statement to translate into immediate action on the ground. For weeks, MSF has been repeating that a massive medical, epidemiological and public health response is desperately needed to saves lives and reverse the course of the epidemic.

“Lives are being lost because the response is too slow.

Who will provide the "massive response"?

Translation: time for working Americans to pony up a boatload of taxes to the UN, and for the US gov’t to restrict even further whatever rights and freedoms said working Americans have left.

And increase the TSA sexual assaults at the airport for grandma and little Johnny - very important.

Don’t tell me that they expected anything different.

After all the WHO is a UN organization.

For the UN incompetence is second only to corruption as their signature quality.

What’s the problem? GRID (later AIDS) and the HIV have always accounted for more morbidity than Ebola ever has, even at its onset. No quarantines or isolation or restricted travel have ever been imposed for the folk so infected.

I would surmise that the world community is waiting for good old Uncle Sugar to come up with some expensive, stop gap medicines to slow the scourge of (dare I say it?) this new African plague. If the spread of AIDS hasn’t necessitated a quarantine, why the concern over Ebola?

The US has, in fact, been working on medicines for Ebola for a long time, on the taxpayer's dime.

Unlike Ebola, AIDS does not kill gruesomely within days. And it is not nearly as infectious.

The U.S. Army, DOD, and CDC is involved, the Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System at the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, etc.

True. You can't get AIDS from fomites or surface contamination. But, within select communities, needles and certain sodomite practices make the rate of infection virtually the same.

Don't have sex with them or share needles, and you're good to go.

Not so with Ebola.

Here comes World War Z!!!!!

According to a senior health fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, the world has no strategic plan to contain the worst Ebola outbreak in history while scientists are saying an outbreak on U.S. soil would require sweeping measures.

Total quarantine of cities or sections of infected cities and restrictions on air travel could be expected.

“We’re now in a perfect storm,” Laurie Garrett said in a CFR conference call Thursday in which she described the United Nations World Health Organization as “bankrupt” and drowning in debt. “There is no strategic plan for how this epidemic will be brought under control.”

And you can bet your ass and the housecat that the one percent select community in America will make sure that most funding will be spent in their communities or risk being labeled and punished for being a racist, bigot homophobe. Say when did biology textbooks change and label the rectum a sexual organ. I missed that day I guess.

“There is no strategic plan for how this epidemic will be brought under control.”

A world that has allowed the airports in West Africa to remain open is a world unable to stop this epidemic.

I agree Noble Jim. Makes one wonder that might be part of the plan along with non-existent borders.
