Those who followed were savages. However you should consider their way of doing business. If you were an entrepreneur or excelled in something or were in opposition to the regime, you were killed. If you were a successful farmer, you were killed. They killed off the best and the brightest by the millions. Many others simply left, and are still leaving for better opportunities.
You would expect that the ones left over are somewhat more docile, since the gene pool has been sanitized of counter revolutionaries. A text book case of how to turn a population into obedient followers.
