British military chiefs are drawing up plans to help American airstrikes in Iraq, the Times reports. Senior figures are considering sending a spy plane to provide intelligence on ISIS positions, while Royal Air Force aircraft capable of refuelling U.S. fighter jets in mid-air will also be sent.
The UK government, which has welcomed American intervention in the fight against ISIS, has also not ruled out conducting its own airstrikes if the humanitarian situation worsens.
MPs are also discussing the possibility of using British special forces, who have long experience in the Kurdish region, to offer help in pinpointing targets.
Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell said: “I am fairly certain . . . that the intelligence capability of Great Britain will be made wholly available to the United States for this purpose. It may be... that British special forces may be of assistance to the Americans.”
Last night, in the first British action in the conflict, a transport aircraft also took off from military base RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire, loaded with supplies for the thousands of refugees stranded in a mountain range close to Kurdistan.

ISIL is reestablishing the old order of Sunni control of the river valleys in the north. The actions are in effect rescue from the artificial partition of the Ottoman lands France and Britain.
There is a tendency to discount the factor of time. Once the boundaries are re established and pretty much agreed, rational control over the radicals will take place. The air strikes are for the purpose of establishing boundaries, not for defeating the ISIL effort.
It will probably take years, perhaps 25.
In Egypt it only took two years so maybe a 25 year horizon is really too long.
The strategy of genocide does nothing to establish anything. I hope that ISIL rots in a hell they create for themselves, post haste.

Newt Gingrich was on with CNN this morning and nailed it as far as I’m concerned on what the US should be doing about the threat of ISIS. And the first thing he pointed out was telling the truth about ISIS, that it’s a radical Islamic extremist organization that will kill everyone unless they convert to Islam. He didn’t mention how puritanical they are about it, but close enough.
He was then asked what the US should be doing and he said this:
I think that we should be arming and training the kurds who are very reliable. We should be arming the traditional tribes with whom we had very good relations back when we were in Iraq. We should be providing air power in a massive way. We should be hunting down ISIS anywhere it exists, whether it’s in northern Syria, Lebanon or it’s in Iraq.
But our goal shouldn’t be to stop ISIS. Our goal should be to destroy ISIS. This is a radical anti-human organization.
…I think if you train and equip kurds and traditi sunni tribes and ally yourself with everybody who wants to defeat isis you will in fact defeat ISIS.
Another excellent point he made is that ISIS is a WORLDWIDE threat, not just a local threat to Iraq. They are in Syria, in Lebanon, and in Iraq. We can’t just pawn this off on Iraq and say ‘good luck’ defeating ISIS.

Some people just deserve to be eliminated. ISIS deserves to be totally demolished.
All of these comments arguing over history and religion are distractions. I would allow that history is important, and got us to where we now are, and that the battles and murder of prisoners described above are religious in nature.
However, one true fact remains that almost all of us can agree on: The murder of prisoners and civilians who have been captured is gruesome and illegal. The Geneva Convention specifies how prisoners of war are to be treated but also includes treatment of conquered civilians (note--it allows a state at war to use weapons against enemy territory and it is not a war crime if civilians are accidentally killed, only if deliberately targeted--in other words, you can only bomb military or industrial targets of your enemy).
So, what ISIS is doing is in direct violation of the all the various Geneva Conventions and other international rules and laws of armed combat as created by the world community of man. The United Nations MUST respond.
An immediate meeting of the Security Council should occur and discuss these atrocities and crimes against humanity that ISIS is committing and force them to stop, even to the point of the world community using armed military/police powers of deadly force.
It is acts like ISIS are making that the United Nations were formed to counter and are supposed to stop! We cannot go back in time to stop Hitler or Pol Pot but surely we must look at what ISIS is doing RIGHT NOW and force them to stop. They are war criminals of the worst kind and if there is ever a justification for a police/military anywhere to use force to stop violence, this is it.
We act now, or we all hypocrites when we declare some event in history is a war crime. We have one taking place before our eyes. Can we not stop bickering about the past and stop this one????
I agree and it cannot be done soon enough. Fox News said they think ISIS has control of the dam in Mosul and they could use it to flood all the way to Baghdad if they choose to do so. The longer everyone waits, the worse it will be.
