A young man lies dead in the streets of Liberia, left to rot in view of passers-by and local children.
He is just one of many Ebola victims to have been dragged out of their homes and dumped on the country's roads by terrified relatives in a desperate bid to avoid being quarantined.
The deadly virus, which can cause victims to suffer from severe bruising and bleeding from the eyes and mouth, has claimed the lives of nearly 900 people across West Africa so far.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.

have to realize the families have been exposed to these people for days and weeks. This goes far beyond the obvious threat caused by leaving them in the street. This means they’re not being taken to the hospital in the first place. Entire families and the people they come in contact with are all pontential cases. This also means the count of infected and dead are inaccurate. All the numbers are higher.
And the potential contacts don’t get quarantine ...

Horrible. No regard for others and disrespect for their own family.
Supposedly, the bodies are being dumped in the street by the familes to ‘avoid quarantine restrictions’ ..... not sure how that works, but the bodies being improperly handled is one of the primary ways Ebola spreads when the families touch them while grieving, etc. The families are at high risk .... that is how Patrick Sawyer contracted it, taking care of his sick sister & now healthcare workers exposed to him have died. This really is “out of control” in so many ways .... I don’t feel good about it at all. India is taking measures with travelers coming in ... can you imagine if it gets into the Indian population with the lack of sanitation & hygiene, etc.? Pandemic, here we come, if we’re not already there.
The locals don’t understand the concept of ‘quarantine’. They view it as a horrid inconvenience. Seriously.
Central Africans behaved thusly during the first few outbreaks of ebola there. They’ve learned since then.

I’ve heard ‘tales’ of the army surrounding smaller, more isolated Central African quarantined villages & they’d shoot anybody who tried to leave ..... that helped ‘persuade’ them as well.
It took and outbreak or two nearly getting away from them for the ‘authorities’ to take the concept of quarantine seriously though.
Western companies pulling people out generally does the trick though in the convincing part.
