U.S. General Is Reportedly Killed by an Afghan Soldier
The New York Times ^ | Tuesday, August 5, 2014 | Matthew Rosenberg and Haris Kakar

A United States Army major general was killed on Tuesday by an Afghan soldier, shot at close range at a military training academy on the outskirts of Kabul, an official of the American-led coalition and Afghan media reported Tuesday. The officer was the highest-ranking member of the American military to die in hostilities in the Afghanistan war.

The coalition official, who spoke on condition of anonymity and would not release the name of the major general, said an unspecified number of other service members of the American-led coalition and Afghan soldiers, including a senior Afghan commander were also shot. Their conditions were not known.

Other details of the shooting were sketchy, and the coalition official would only confirm that “an incident” had taken place at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy.

The Taliban, which often takes credit for insider attacks, had no immediate comment on Tuesday. Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the insurgents, said he was still trying to collect information about the incident.

But, he added, the Taliban had many people inside the camp, and that one of their loyalists could have been responsible for the attack.

He will say it is time to bug out. This only helps Obama sell to a willing public that we should leave completely with no residual force.

I agree. There is no such thing as a cosmetic war. War is for real, do it right or come home.

These green on blue attacks have been going on for some time. Obama and the military have been downplaying it.

Today's attack is the first in Afghanistan since Oct. 26, when an Afghan soldier wounded two Coalition troops in a shooting at a base outside Kabul. Last year there were a total of 13 green-on-blue attacks in Afghanistan, amounting to nearly 10 percent of total Coalition fatalities for the year. That figure was down from a high of 44 attacks in 2012, according to Long War Journal statistics. [See LWJ special report, Green-on-blue attacks in Afghanistan: the data, for more information.] The two fatalities from today's green-on-blue attack comprise 18 percent of the total Coalition fatalities so far this year, which have all been American.

The long lull in attacks since October is due in large part to the ongoing drawdown in Coalition personnel, which has greatly reduced partnering with Afghan forces, as well as enhanced security measures such as the use of "guardian angels" during joint operations

They needs to setup “gun-free zones”; that’ll do it.

We need to go Genghis Kahn to win in Afghanistan. Good ‘ole Genghis is the last person to firmly place that hellhole under his thumb.

....”We should have turned Afghanistan into a parking lot in 2001”......

Wouldn’t have been hard to justify that after 9/11. Instead the US believes it can “change” the mindset of a nation and it’s Government when in fact most in the nations don’t want it changed.

Taliban war lords and other tribal leaders will always use violence to gain power there. It’s their culture. I say bring all our guys home and bomb all their camps.....done deal til the next batch rises to the top and then bomb them.

Not sure why you feel it necessary to cast aspersions on somebody you don’t know. My loyalty is downward, to the 120 people for whom I’m responsible, and upward, to the Constitution of the United States. Sorry you’ve apparently had bad experiences with colonels in the past.

The German general shot is not in critical condition. The American general shot is dead.

Yup, had a German general been murdered like that during WWII at a training camp, you can bet by today, justice would have been meted out! We could do better if we adopted some of the Nazi strategy when we have to fight a war. Not excusing their evil ways, they just didn’t put up with such things, and neither should we.

Hmmmm.. How does an ARMED AFGHAN get this close to our General???? Me thinks this was a HIT orchestrated by Obama. Perhaps he didn't like this general or perhaps HE NEEDED AN EXCUSE TO WITHDRAW OUR TROOPS BEFORE 2016.

Another UGLY first for Obama.. This was the highest ranked individual killed in action since Vietnam.

That's how the whole middle east should have been handled from the start. Either do what it takes to actually win a war, or don't bother, because you cant win a war with your hands tied behind your back.

Look at the success ISIS is having... it's because they are actually fighting to WIN, instead of fighting with their hands tied.

You want to win.. you strike fear and terror into your enemy and get them to beg you to stop! and you do that by rounding up the ones you catch and their families and offing them as an example.

This incident has at least some of the earmarks of a classic ol’fragging. I mean the goat humper was actually, apparently, in the program versus a ‘bunny with a stolen uni. Maybe akmud was getting tired of getting caught with his girl goat what with the kidding and all, and maybe he was pulling too much latrine duty. After all, he probly refused to use the flush terlet, and didn’t understand why he had to clean it up anyway.

By way of comparison, the Israelis would have already knocked his family’s house down. My preference would be to knock his entire county down just to keep the home folks honest. Semper Fi
