More Young Adults Getting Mental Health Care Under Obamacare: Study
U.S.News & World Report ^ | Aug. 4, 2014 | Amy Norton HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Aug. 4, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The number of young American adults getting mental health treatment has risen since the rule on dependent coverage went into effect with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, a new study finds.

That key provision ensures that those aged 19 to 25 have the option of remaining on their parents' health insurance plan. It's been in effect since September 2010.

In the new study, researchers found that the move may be allowing more young adults to receive mental health care. Soon after the rule took hold, the number of 18- to 25-year-olds in mental health treatment rose nationally -- by a couple of percentage points among those who had potential symptoms of psychiatric conditions.

"That's very good news," said Dr. Jeffrey Borenstein, a psychiatrist and president of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation in New York City.

"Often, mental health disorders like schizophrenia, depression and substance abuse first manifest in this age group," said Borenstein, who was not involved in the study. At the same time, he added, those disorders can keep some young adults from holding a job -- and gaining their own health insurance.

Brendan Saloner, one of the researchers on the study, agreed that young adults are "particularly vulnerable" for those reasons.

Based on the new findings, Saloner said, the rule seems to be a "stepping stone" to improving young Americans' access to mental health care.

It is not “mental health care”, it is “re-education”.

A combination of incentives and negative conditioning to get a complaisant subject, who will then be a willing and reliable “supporter” of the Current Regime.

Our kids owe $17 trillion tge lane participation rate among 20 to 24 is at its highest since 1983 and their unemployment rate is 10%

If they don’t know whom to vote for ten why are parents not telling them about this?

Why are we not protecting them. Why are we allowing 18 year olds to vote? That’s our decision. It was changed in the 1970’s or better known as during Viet nam

And because of Vietnam

People here can hate on them but I can assure anyone the rare kid will be a grateful 45 year old when were 85 needing assistance

Get a clue

Quickest way to get ADD/HD (Adderal/amphetamine) drugs is thru their mental health professional.

...now forever barred from possessing firearms.

Thank you. I was wondering if anyone else would make that connection.

Not only are we creating a generation dependent on the government, we are creating a generation that could not break those chains of slavery if they wanted to.

I would enjoy seeing statistical break downs of these people. I hope some are genuinely getting help they need. but I do fear... How many are on marijuana which is now practically legal? How many are using the ‘treatment’ to gain access to powerful drugs, like Benzos and valium, that are handed out like candy and very addictive? How many are getting medical marijuana cards just because they can?

The growth of more young people needing counseling is a result of the loss of Christian values, and the sense of a need for God and a Savior. Jesus told us to repent and believe in the Gospel. Having a relationship with God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is so uplifting, and yields abundant joy and forgiveness and mercy.

Nothing beats a sense of HOPE when life is giving you a bunch of melons.

It is the perfect model. Toss a net out, treat those that actually need it (a small percentage) and then give handouts to the rest. That way, the program “helps those in need”. A win-win for votes.

Since cars got much safer, the ambulance chasing trade there is falling off.

A lot of these lawyers are switching to disability claims law.

The adverts during Springer and Maury are full of them.

Yes indeed. Are we surprised.that the rise of a secular society spawns hopelessness and mental health.problems?

seems the obvious outcome to me.
