At least 367 people have been killed and some 1,300 injured by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck in south-west China, state news agency Xinhua says.
The US Geological Survey said the quake struck about 11km (7 miles) north-west of Wenping in Yunnan province at 16:30 local time (08:30 GMT).

Likely they do not have to build to specs for quakes.
"We moved our base camp last night and were now positioned literally
within feet of the river. Have been sitting here watching the border
patrol patrolling in their riverboats all night and all morning..."~Jim Robinson
Yup.
Just curious. Why did they put quotes around the ‘kills 367’?
They do have codes, sort of but contractors in China are notorious for either omitting reinforcing re-bar altogether or using stretched (cheaper) re-bar. The main problem is corruption. Case in point the Juyuan Middle School in Sichuan province May 2008. Instant pancake and hundreds of dead kids.
Not sure, but here is the official source report: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2014-08/04/content_18239016.htm
I remember pictures of a bridge support that under a skim of concrete was filled with garbage, including a lot of cardboard.
imagine if that same thing happened in one of those shoddy theme cities they built?
Their only saving grace is that those places are almost deserted.
They definitely have codes and specs. But the construction process is chaos.
