Zero Hedge ^ | 31 July 2013 | Tyler Durden

Thanks to the Independent, we may know the answer, and it is a doozy, because according to some it is nothing shy of a sequel to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact: allegedly Germany and Russia have been working on a secret plan to broker a peaceful solution to end international tensions over the Ukraine, one which would negotiate to trade Crimea's sovereignty for guarantees on energy security and trade.

I wonder if this story has any legs…?

Wow, though.

I have not read much about this claim.. but I’m pretty sure that Obama fund-raises, parties, golfs, and goofs-off in the parts of the country that are booming. Several area around San Francisco for example.

No amount of bellyaching is going to give Crimea back to Ukraine anyway. It is something like 85% ethnic Russian.

Nobody has the stomach to go to war over a party favor which Nikita Khrushchev gave to Ukraine province back in 1954.

Hell, declare it an international state (albeit in Russian orbit) and relocate the UN there.

I believe these claims by “anonymous sources” are made up to push Russian view and to demoralize Ukrainians. The Independent is owned by an ex-KGB Russian billionaire.

How 18th Century—cutting up the world to keep the peace. Maybe it will work this time. Gas for land in Ukraine. If it ends the “Civil War” it might have some benifits—Ukraine needs to get something out of this deal too—maybe some free gas? Debt relief—a new treaty with Putin? Permission to join Nato? Stop the killing and settle down—and hope Putin has eyes on someplace else! Baltic states? Georgia? Cuba? Alaska?

When Weiszacker revealed the Secret Protocol to the Non Aggression Pact while on the witness stand at Nuremberg, the Soviet Prosecutor went nuts. But giving away land that doesn't belong to them is a game all European powers have played.

Of course Germany would make a deal over Ukraine if the opportunity arises and Poland won't scream too loudly. To a large extent Germany is responsible for the idea of Ukraine as a nation rather than a region both Poland and Russia controlled parts of.

The extreme lack of any knowledge of history is what shines though when most Americans talk about Ukraine. History of Europe just isn't taught in the US anymore and was primarily focused on Western Europe when it was.

A good start is how the borders of the current Ukraine were drawn where they now are and by who.

And while some people demand the current incarnation of Ukraine be defended and the Cold War restarted, Syria, Iraq, and Israel, are the victims of varying degrees of mass murder at the hands of Muzzie rabid dogs.

Rabid, Christian slaughtering, dogs funded by the same petroleum and NG exporters who have been trying to derail Russian fuel sales to Western Europe since the first pipeline to Europe was proposed. Perverse, untrustworthy, incredibly wealthy, exporters who prospered during the Cold War with no fear of anyone interfering with their spreading radical Iz Lame other than the occasional secular leader like Nassar (who threw the Muslim Brotherhood out of Egypt) and Assad's father (who nearly destroyed what remained of them).

But, nothing to see here, move along, the US media will let you know what's important.

Russia already has given guarantees to Ukraine. Sounds like a deal, more guarantees in return for Ukraine surrendering. Brilliant idea, let’s get John Kerry working on this right away. Or someone else with experience in brokering Arab-Israeli peace plans, which are always the same: Arab guarantees for Israeli land. Brilliant.
