I wonder why the idea of benefiting from hard work didn't sink in with slaves?

I'm sure I'll be accused of being racist for passing this on, and it certainly isn't politically correct, but true -

those that were captured for slavery were far from being the smartest, fastest or most motivated. Quite often they were sold to the slave traders by their own tribes, who practiced slavery.
