Why isn’t Apple and Google joining in to protect privacy?

Apple is, at least. Google cooperates with tyrants, whether domestic or foreign (China of course, and the EU with its “right to be forgotten” thingy).

Read the article, Apple is right there. Also, keep in mind that the NSA has repeatedly complained about how hard Apple iDevices are to crack and recover data from. No such complaints from them about Microsoft and Google’s mobile platforms... Apple also has refused to install a backdoor for the NSA. That’s some resistance right there.
