CBS News ^ | 07/31/2014

The George Washington Bridge spanning New York and New Jersey is getting a fence to help curb suicides as the number of deaths there approaches record levels.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says there have been 13 suicides and 40 rescues on the span so far this year. There were 16 deaths for all of 2013.

Plans call for erecting a 9-foot fence to replace the current railing to make jumping from the bridge difficult.

Chief structural engineer Bernie Yostpile tells The Record newspaper that the project will cost $37 million to $47 million and will be completed in 2022.

I have mixed feelings....If someone is intent on suicide...it’s going to happen.

I thought the politicians said “fences don’t work”. Why are we wasting this money?

Whose jumping? Banksters?? Stockbrokers??. Surely no one on the dole is jumping, except up to get another entitlement.

What is leading to these suicides? All is fine in the country according to the ministry of lies and the lead court jester. Why just yesterday I heard that he said things are so good the GOP has nothing to do but hate him.

RE: .If someone is intent on suicide...it’s going to happen.

Yep, they can always try other bridges — Brooklyn, Verrazano, Queensburrough, Whitestone, Throgs Neck, Tappan Zee.... what are we going to do, build $40 Million fences for all of them?

The Golden Gate Bridge Authority had to put up a VERY high fence to stop the jumpers. It was put up YEARS ago. It stopped the jumpers cold.

A FEW had survived the jump anyway. WHAT a sad commentary on a person's life.

So, why wait until 2022 to finish the fence if an average of 15 people a year are jumping to their deaths?

That’s eight years and another 120 people.

Oh, the humanity.

Don’t they CARE?!!! ///s

Very true. But WHY do they have to do it publicly? Why not do it at home, privately? Guns, poison, step in front of a bus...many other ways. Besides, in many of those ways, people still manage to survive.

Remember the monks who doused themselves in gasoline then set themselves on fire? NONE of them survived the self-immolation. And THEY did it in public. WHY do it in public?

Ultimate egotism, in my opinion, destroying GOD's gift to us: life.

I think I just read a story where Golden Gate was going to get a net.

Stupid thinking. It doesn't save a life. It saves the public from having to witness that selfish self destruction.

REGULATIONS

UNIONS

TOO MANY COOKS

If it were China, they’d have done it in the blink of an eye (figuratively ).

Are you suggesting that there's no way to prevent people from illegally entering the Hudson River? You just might be right...I've been to Hoboken!

It's MIGHTY difficult to climb up over the existing barrier. It really is. But, I guess there are those who WILL insist on the public suicide.

It's the ULTIMATE God-bashing: destroying God's gift to us: LIFE...AND in public.

I think it’s strange they’re putting a net beneath the Golden gate bridge to prevent suicides. In an area that, by and large, promotes “choice” they don’t mind people killing another soul just not their own.

The use to call it Arkanside. So I guess the equivalent these days would be Kenyanside. Louis Lerner comes to mind.

Putting fences at great taxpayer expense to curb suicides is yet another LIB wet dream. Why not make a law requiring everyone to be happy? LIBs are good at wasting other peoples’ money. I guess eventually these morons will make illegal to go outside without a helmet and a state-approved minder. This net idea is feel-good make-work.

I haven’t seen this net but couldn’t a jumper simply crawl to the edge of the net and jump again?
