Actually, Bray, we lost seats in the 1998 Congressional elections. It wasn't a lot, and considering the all-out media effort to save Clinton (Just about a private matter; sex). Still, usually the opposition party picks UP seats in an off year election:

Leader
Newt Gingrich Dick Gephardt

Party
Republican Democratic

Last election (1996)
227 seats 206 seats

Seats won 1998
223 211

Seat change
Decrease 4 Increase 5

Popular vote
32,237,964 31,490,298

2000

Leader
Dennis Hastert Dick Gephardt

Party
Republican Democratic

Seats won in 2000
221 212

Seat change
Decrease 2 Increase 1

Popular vote
46,992,383 46,582,167

It still wasn’t the all out disaster everyone claims it will be. This is going to be a much more difficult issue to laugh off as just about sex and everyone lies about cheating. This is the IRS being turned on private citizens, lying about a cover-up and the border disaster.

I would not count the gains before they happen this fall.

The 2 leaders who lost their positions after the impeachment were — Republicans: Gingrich was forced out as Speaker, and his replacement, Bob Livingston, was forced out due to ‘zipper’ problems.

Clinton’s popularity/approval soared to the point that he has been the most popular former president of the last 50 years.

That may be what the current Dems are hoping would happen if the evil Repubs start Articles Impeachment against Obama. They could combine the Race Card and the Victim Card. Does the GOP have the ‘stones’ to combat and win against that?
