In Chinese shadow, Hong Kong fights for its future

As skyscrapers around Hong Kong harbor erupted into a reverie of laser beams and giant digital displays during their synchronized nightly light show, one innocuous 28-story building near the water’s edge had stayed dark for months, clad in bamboo scaffolding for a face-lift.

Then, in June, the renovated tower came to life, flashing giant Chinese characters that some in Hong Kong saw as a warning.

“People’s Liberation Army,” it said.

Many in this prosperous city had already feared that Hong Kong’s future as an open society as well as a semi-autonomous part of China was in jeopardy in the face of perceived growing intervention from Beijing. …

That’s OK. Maybe our red-complicit press will soon be referring to that formerly “semi-autonomous region” by its Mandarin Pinyin rendition “Xianggang”, just as they quietly started dumping Wade-Giles in favor of the Pinyin rendition for CPC leaders’ names (e.g. Deng Xiaoping instead of Teng Hsiao-p’ing), never mind dumping Postal Romanization too (Beijing instead of Peking) . . .

It can be argued that with the rise of the middle class and the Chicaps, Hong Kong is prevailing over the Chicoms.

You are of course correct but refuse to admit change. I would urge you to begin using the term Chicaps to reflect the immense change that has occurred in the last say 25 years.

The all encompassing Chicom term is anachronistic.

No it is not. Remember that “state capitalism”, a term alluded to in the ten planks of communism in the second chapter of the Manifesto, is still in effect in Red China; the government has a piece of everything.
