Sky News understands airlines had been warned in recent days not to fly over Mali.
The plane involved is a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 operated by Swiftair. The plane was asked to change route at 1.38am GMT (2.38am BST) because of a storm in the area.

There is always the issue of a plane adjusting its altitude for turbulence, for approach, for other reasons that I don’t know about since I’m not an aviator.
