I guess, prior to the Israeli offensive, shooting barrages of rockets into civilian areas, by Hamas, was acceptable and not a crime...

The “war crime” is the Hamas military operations using the entire population of Gaza as human shields.
It does so NOT because it gives a damn about the civilians in Gaza but because it intentionally wants martyrs to its cause.
