WASHINGTON — A New York congressman is reintroducing legislation to install anti-missile technologies on U.S. commercial airliners, prompted by the Ukraine air disaster and Hamas rockets in the Gaza crisis.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-Long Island) on Tuesday confirmed his plans to dust off and recraft a 2003 proposal he made with Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) to require the Defense Department to equip passenger planes with protections against missiles.
The original legislation, the Commercial Airline Missile Defense Act, followed high-profile air tragedies and the 9/11 attacks.
The anti-missile systems were considered too expensive, however, and the legislation was not enacted, but the proposal prompted greater government exploration of such technologies for commercial use.
The new proposal will likely call for anti-missile technology only for planes flying in dangerous, mostly foreign, territory, Israel said.

Politicians wasting money to show they are doing something. Unless Israel is going to require commercial jets to carry ECM systems these anti-missile systems only work against heat seeking missiles not radar guided like the BUK.

I’ve got an idea. Simply get serious about eradicating all terrorists. Quit placing “profiling” blocks and other impediments in the way of those trying to take them out.
Quit allowing them to immigrate around the world. If Islam is the problem, then put a freeze on all Islamic adherents ability to fly.
Quit sending in billions to terrorist efforts. Gaza, Syria, Libya, just quit arming them and sending in funds.
The West should get serious, and quick screwing with it’s own domestic populace, unless they are a member of a recognized terrorist sympathizing group.

The two Su-25 Frogfoot fighters shot down today had radar warning receivers, radar/IR chaff, flares, and pilots trained in their use, but it didn’t seem to help.
