Police are investigating the city's seventh homicide of the year after a man was shot in the chest Saturday night in the Forest Park neighborhood.
Police have yet to publicly identify the 27-year-old victim, a city resident who was shot around 9:15 p.m. near the corner of White and Orange streets.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic or light-skinned black man armed with a silver handgun. Witnesses told police the gunman had a full beard and "nappy hair" in the back, and he was wearing a white T-shirt and light-colored shorts.
Sgt. John Delaney, a spokesman for the Springfield Police Department, said the shooter was last seen fleeing toward Orange Street, but initial reports from the scene indicated the suspect ran in the opposite direction toward Grand Street.
"Police are still looking for a motive; this was not a random shooting," Delaney said.
At the crime scene, police officers quickly found a gunshot victim on the ground near the Golden Eagle Apartments and blocked off White Street from Orange Street to the nearby apartments. Uniformed and plainclothes investigators immediately secured the scene and began scouring the area for evidence.
"You got a 7 coming, right?" a responding officer asked a police dispatcher, using the code number for an ambulance. After the dispatcher confirmed an ambulance was en route, the officer replied, "OK, make sure they step on it. We're gonna need 'em up here."
The wounded man was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:53 p.m., Delaney said.

The gunman was described as having a full beard and “Nappy” hair, Hmmmm, let me guess, NOT North Korean?
Hey, move some illegal alien gangbangers into an abandoned shopping mall in the area. That’ll help things!
White street, you say? They obviously died because the street is racist and because the suspect is a “White-Hispanic”.
**He obviously
I dunno...a “silver” handgun makes it sound like Kin Jung Youn might be on the prowl.
I used to live in that area(3 streets away.). I was a cesspool 22 years ago. I hasn’t gotten any better.
I live nearby and occasionally have thru drive thru that area. It is a place the simply drive thru and not stop.
I used to live on Oakland St, right down from the fire station. My in laws lived there for forty years and it was always a decent area. Not rich, but not dirt poor. After being out of town for four years, my wife and I moved back there in the early 90’s. The first night back, a girl was raped at Kensington St school—literally in our back yard.
I could not get out of there fast enough.
Yeah Mass has some crappy gun laws but it is still pretty easy to get your concealed carry permit as long as you don’t have a criminal record. Took me about 30 days to get mine. I carry my Glock most days. Plenty of guns at home too.
Unless you live in a “red” town and get a restricted permit because the chief done ‘t like citizens with guns.
