I often call to mind the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland when I think of Israel, and imagine what it would be like to crowd seven million people onto the fragments of the island most familiar to visitors. And think further of what it would be like to see Carbonear or Twillingate or St. Johns under deadly attack on and off for 70 years, and further troubled by a rain of thousands of rockets and missiles fired apparently at whim, indifferent to their targets, by a remorseless enemy.
Considering this, and all its struggles since its birth, Ive long thought that tiny, democratic Israel should just be left alone to thrive. Maybe others are starting to see it that way, too. I sense some turn in the worlds opinion on what we call the Middle East conflict. The terms of understanding are changing.
Canada, more particularly Stephen Harper, can take partial credit for some of that change. As a world leader, Mr. Harper has been the best counter-voice to the cliched hostility and animus found in most self-labelled progressive perspectives. Indeed his clarity on Israels right to exist, to be free of menace and molestation from its enemies, greatly annoys the professional anti-Israelis who flourish on the campuses and in the progressive opinion pages of the West.

Canada Ping!
Also read through for strong closing thoughts on the value of defending the tenets of Western Civilization.
I don’t understand what happened. There’s a nightmare scene enacted dozens of times a day. A deputy gets called to a domestic violence scene. The family cowers before a fierce drunk with a weapon. The deputy moves in on the drunk and the entire family suddenly turns on and attacks the deputy. <This has been the press as the family and Palestinians as the abusive dad. Israel plays the deputy. But this time the family turned on the abuser. What happened? Why is this time different?
Good article. I noticed a bit of that turn lately. Maybe at some point people have to admit if hurts when you do that then stop doing that.
I wonder if many people in the world aren’t finally getting sick of the Palies and realize they’re mostly trouble-making losers who cannot create a competent society. Even libs come to their senses occasionally.
I’ve seen this same story in the news since my childhood. I was sick of it back in the ‘70’s. An area smaller than two Florida counties is in the news for 30 plus years? There is nothing else of importance in the world? Give me a break.
“Why is this time different?”
Fear perhaps. The self protection circuits can over ride politics or any other consideration for that matter. With the ‘great Satan’ fading and Israel backed up to the wall the “process” seems to have advanced to another place. The polarity of things has shifted?
Sometimes the first couple of paragraphs of the story is in fact the worst part to excerpt.
“Palies are mostly trouble-making losers who cannot create a competent society.”
The evidence is overwhelming. When Jewish settlers were forcibly removed from Gaza in 2005, the productive greenhouses & food processing plants that were left behind were instantly trashed & looted into uselessness by Pali mobs.
They behave like ill mannered children, only now with Iranian missiles. Palis are such a menace to civilization that not even their fellow Arab Muslims can stand them.
If that is true about the media going to Israel’s side, if I was Israel, I would be very leery and on my guard. Why? History has shown that when your enemy suddenly becomes your friend and you embrace him, bad things usually happen to you.
Hope springs eternal, but pass the ammunition anyway.
It’s simple. This time Obama looks bad.
Before, the Palis would goad Israel into a response, then cry for peace as soon as they were significantly wounded. Then some left-winger would swoop in and broker a “cease-fire” (i.e. a chance for the Palis to rearm and reorg) and prove that lefties are the ones that “understand” the situation.
This time, like the incompetent he is, Obama stuck his nose in before Hamas was ready to give up. Now he looks like a boob, and the continued fighting makes him look as impotent as he actually is. The media can’t have that. So this time it is Hamas’ fault, in order to shield Obama from looking like the bystander he is...
They have no senses to come to.
Rex Murphy is the single voice of sanity on the entire CBC network. He plays no favourites, and will call to task anyone or anything that is inconsistent with what is proper, no matter what side of the political spectrum the transgression against right occurs.
I enjoy his diatribes, even, or especially, when he takes “my” guys to the woodshed.
The reality of the Evil of Islam, manifest in ISIS
Who is providing all the thousands of missiles that hamas is firing at Israel? They are not cheap.
