Four out of five illegal immigrants seeking driver’s licenses under a new D.C. law have failed a written knowledge test — a rocky start to a program that in its first two months has issued 268 licenses, according to city officials.
The failure rate of 80 percent compares with a 58 percent failure rate for people seeking traditional driver’s licenses, the Department of Motor Vehicles told a D.C. Council committee. In addition, a check of the DMV website this week shows a massive backlog in appointments required to apply for the District’s “limited-purpose license.” The first available date for an illegal immigrant to get an appointment is in March, and more than 6,000 appointments are pending.

Steven A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, said no evidence shows that giving illegal immigrants driver’s licenses has improved public safety, especially given that many don’t make it past the written exam.
“You could argue that just studying for the test could make a better driver,” said Mr. Camarota, whose group favors a crackdown on immigration. “But these licenses could facilitate illegal activity such as getting a job or avoiding detention. Those who don’t pass the test could just keep on driving.”
Mr. Camarota said one of the biggest challenges in implementing a statewide program is the lack of verifiable documentation.
“Verifying people’s identity is very difficult,” he said. “You’ve been issuing driver’s licenses to people who can’t verify their identity so they can make a new [identity].”

Complicating the problem for us 'other folks' waiting to get a DMV appointment:
"DMV officials told Ms. Cheh’s committee that has led to other problems, such as a rate of no-shows as high as 40 percent and no way to eliminate duplicate reservations."
Worse are those illegals applying for trucker’s licenses.

Forget a written test...most illegal alien invaders were only driving a donkey, at best, a few weeks ago. Don’t they have to show some proficiency and familiarity with these things called “cars”? Rather than being given a “test” anyway, they should be “given” a prison cell, have their assets seized and, then, deported?
make the test 12 questions about drinking and child rape and they’ll pass with flying colors. Make it in Spanish though
Don’t worry. DC will give the illegals drivers licenses anywhere. It’s the PC thing to do.
Drive with me one day and you’ll understand what is out there on the road. I saw drivers the other day who defied the laws of gravity and sanity. Never a cop around to stop the bad guys, only people who they can get money from on trumped up tickets, esp. out of area people.
Remember: Since the 1960’s, DC has had some form of Home Rule, including the Mayor, Mr. Crackhead/Crack Eater, for Life, Marion Barry. That explains a lot of why DC is still a Democrat-run cesspool for the working people (the rich elite Democrats don’t live with the riff-raff. What you think they would practice what they preach for others? Come on folks, these are Democrats. What’s good for them is not what they want for you).
It is just going to get worse, and more and more decent people are getting armed.
My 9 year old granddaughter just popped off a couple of 40cal. rounds at a target and hit it at 20-30 feet. First time too, but not the last.

Anne Schaufele, a lawyer who works for Ayuda, a nonprofit immigration group, said limited literacy and language discrepancies could be reasons why people are failing. “There may be an issue with the ****Spanish in the booklet being different than the Spanish in the test*****,” Ms. Schaufele said. “If you have two different people writing the test and the manual, then it is likely that a person could get a question wrong.”
I had to re-take my driver’s test in MD because I am taking medication. Had to prove that it did not affect my driving. No biggie. Aced the vision, written, and driving tests w/no problem.
When I was there - at least 1/2 the Hispanics failed the written. On the driver’s test - I saw 3 of them who couldn’t follow SIMPLE instructions.
Such as: DO NOT EXIT THE VEHICLE when waiting in line for the driving test. Automatic fail for 1 person.
The other 2 couldn’t follow road instructions from the examiner - when that happens, the examiner has to drive the car back to the MVA ...
How can they drive on American roads if they can’t read the signs. One Way, Do Not Enter, Stop, etc. Major wrecks caused by these people.
It isn’t about driving. It’s about being able to answer “yes” when asked if they want to register to vote.
The test is clearly RACIST.
Forget the rush of illegals on our southern border for a moment.
How can we expect Congress to solve the mess along the southern border, when they can't or won't even try to stop illegals from living in DC?
My point is this: This heated national debate surrounding the chaotic mess along our southern border is a good time for Congress to also discuss why there are so many illegals living in DC, and for Congress to deport all illegals from DC once and for all.
There should be this sign in DC: "No illegals allowed in DC."
obama is pleased as this chaos is what he wants.
