Professor Paul Krugman is leaving Princeton. Is he leaving in disgrace?
Not long, as these things go, before his departure was announced Krugman thoroughly was indicted and publicly eviscerated for intellectual dishonesty by Harvards Niall Ferguson in a hard-hitting three-part series in the Huffington Post, beginning here, and with a coda in Project Syndicate, all summarized at Forbes.com. Ferguson, on Krugman:
Where I come from we do not fear bullies. We despise them. And we do so because we understand that what motivates their bullying is a deep sense of insecurity. Unfortunately for Krugtron the Invincible, his ultimate nightmare has just become a reality. By applying the methods of the historian by quoting and contextualizing his own published words I believe I have now made him what he richly deserves to be: a figure of fun, whose predictions (and proscriptions) no one should ever again take seriously."
Princeton, according to Bloomberg News, acknowledged Krugmans departure with an extraordinarily tepid comment by a spokesperson. Hes been a valued member of our faculty and we appreciate his 14 years at Princeton.
Shortly after Krugmans departure was announced no less than the revered Paul Volcker, himself a Princeton alum, made a comment subject unnamed sounding as if directed at Prof. Krugman. It sounded like Dont let the saloon doors hit you on the way out. Bub.
To the Daily Princetonian , Volcker stated with refreshing bluntness:
The responsibility of any central bank is price stability. They ought to make sure that they are making policies that are convincing to the public and to the markets that theyre not going to tolerate inflation.
This was followed by a show-stopping statement: This kind of stuff that youre being taught at Princeton disturbs me.
Taught at Princeton by
whom?

Karma exists.
Yeah...hope the “Karma” speeds up...
Heh.
Buh-bye!
Not to worry. Paul Krugman will join the City University of New York’s Graduate Center as an economics professor in the Ph.D. program and as a distinguished scholar at the Graduate Centers Luxembourg Income Study Center.
So, what kind of salary does he get for that position?
According to the National Review:
The City University of New York recently announced that it is going to pay Paul Krugman $225,000 for part-time work studying... income inequality.
That’s $25,000 per month (over two semesters), to play a modest role in our public events and contribute to the build-up of a new inequality initiative.
It is not clear, and neither CUNY nor Krugman was able to explain, what contribute to the build-up entails.
For those who don’t know... CUNY, which is publicly funded, pays adjunct professors approximately $3,000 per course. The annual salaries of tenured (but undistinguished) professors, meanwhile, top out at $116,364,

Great news.
RE: Great news.
Yes, for Princeton, but bad news for CUNY.
So, even liberals have figured out the former Enron adviser is a fraud and political huckster?
A textbook example of "damning by faint praise."
But sadly not applicable in this case.
No tar.
No feathers.
No rail.
Pity.
A salary of $25,000 a month sure sounds like an inequality initiative.
Since a good many of the ivy-league schools have amply demonstrated their politically correct lowering of standards (when required), Krugfool was an ideal additional to the Princeton faculty.
And, of course, there’s always the selectively scorned “Nobel” label attached to his name. That label remains a plus for science recipients, but a sure indication of demonstrated idiocy for Peace, Literature, and Economics prizes.
Fact it, Krugram is a demonstrated dork.
Math is not his friend.
Actually, pretty much no one is his friend.
Thanks for posting this information on Krugman’s CUNY salary prospects and contrasting that with what a regular faculty or adjunct is paid. Such information cannot be explained as anything but a political payoff. I can add that if a NY university was seeking a new professor, that university would have salary restrictions that would not permit hiring someone at twice the budgeted salary regardless of the background of the applicant. The applicant would simply have to accept the budgeted salary or decline to take the position.
Krugman is a disgrace. He should be sent to a zoo. Many of the animals are smarter.
I’m sure Krugman would be delighted to explain to you why moving from Princeton to CUNY is actually a promotion and something he’s been wanting to do for years.
I doubt anyone can find daylight between a liberal Ivy League school and an ultra liberal economist.
RE: Im sure Krugman would be delighted to explain to you why moving from Princeton to CUNY is actually a promotion and something hes been wanting to do for years.
Well, first of all, being paid for doing almost nothing at all is hard to pass up.
According tot he National Review:
In the first year, the job wont involve any teaching at all. CUNYs words told him for the first year hell be asked to contribute to the buildup of [the Luxembourg Income Study Center] and our inequality project, and to play[ ] some kind of modest (not onerous!) role in our public events,; for the second year, hell be expected to teach one weekly graduate seminar for one semester (most professors of his rank teach two).
So that, combined with his Times columnist salary, speaking fees, and royalties from his best-selling introductory economics textbook, you can be sure he is. Good for him hes an extremely clever economist and an immensely popular public figure in some quarters, hes probably worth it to CUNY.
And oh yeah, Krugman will also be given an annual research/travel fund of $10,000, and up to $10,000 for moving expenses.
What’s not to like?
