Time to declare martial law in … Chicago?
Hotair ^ | 07/09/2014 | Ed Morrissey

No one doubts that Chicago has a significant problem with violence. As of Monday, the city logged its 200th homicide this year, a shooting that followed a dozen other shooting murders over the Independence Day holiday weekend, and dozens of more wounded in other incidents in the same time frame. It’s worth noting, though, that this is the latest the city hit its 200th homicide in the last four years, according to Red Eye Chicago, and that the homicide rate is down 4% over last year, which was the lowest year for Chicago homicides in nearly 50 years.

Still, it’s looking pretty violent on the streets of the Windy City, despite having some of the toughest gun-control laws in the nation. It’s so violent out there that Roland Martin calls for the National Guard to impose something very akin to martial law on the streets of Chicago to save what he calls … “Chiraq”:

A major American city is quickly being lost to guns, gangs, drugs and hopelessness, and political and business leaders are giving lip service to the problem. Yet while our politicians dither, the city’s Southside and Westside residents are living in perpetual fear, afraid to walk the streets.

It’s time for Mayor Rahn Emanuel to put his ego and political ambitions aside. It’s time for him to ask the state police and the National Guard to come into Chicago and assist the police department in regaining control of the city’s streets.

Except that he’s not really limiting their role to simple law-enforcement assistance:

Some critics have said that putting troops on the ground is the wrong signal to send. I disagree. There is no reason the National Guard can’t drop a dragnet over the hot spots in Chicago.

hmmmm... might not be a bad idea, but it would never happen, nor would it happen in Detroit, and for the same reason.

It wouldn’t further the cause of leftist fascism.

It would be easier to do this sort of thing in Chicago than in other cities because of how localized the violence is.

No, I think it’s time the US pulled out of Chicago altogether. It’s a quagmire, and there are no clear military objectives to keeping it.

Ha! The UN ‘tidy-bowl, blue helmets’ would be appropriate!

It’s time for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to put his ego and political ambitions aside.

Hahaha! Not a chance. He is a political animal first and foremost and can't change that any more than a tiger can wash off his stripes.
But I bet he wants to impose Martial Law ... on his opponents.

Reading comprehension is not a quality for which Chicago politicians are known.

The most recent success story in what had been an urban disaster was by Rudy Giuliani in NYC. It was done in an orderly, methodical manner, used police to their greatest effect, as well as boosted their morale, because it worked.

It worked in stages.

1) Determine the troublesome neighborhoods, then select a central block and flood it with police. They are tasked with policing up *everything*, including really petty stuff. They do ID checks, frequent searches, etc. It is anticipated that the real problem criminals will flee, and quickly, figuring on coming back later.

2) A small, core group of the police get to know *everybody* on the block, because after the majority of the police move on to the next block, the core group will stay behind. By knowing everybody, they instantly recognize strangers, especially criminals trying to come back to their old turf, so they are all over them, making it impossible for them to get back to business.

The rationale here is that once a neighborhood has been “cleaned”, it is a LOT harder for criminals to reestablish themselves.

(And for those who believe in gun liberty, this would be the ideal time to arm the “good citizens” on that block, who would then help the police to keep it a good block, though this opportunity was missed in NYC.)

3) Once a block has been “cleaned”, it is a great opportunity to redevelop old or abandoned buildings in poor repair, and to move in business. So hot on the heals of being cleaned, they get prosperity, with new jobs and opportunities. The crime cycle is broken.

Martial law is a bad idea but probably something we will all see under a democrat president.

Why is it a bad idea?

Because the first thing the government will do when the president declares martial law will be to confiscate all legally owned firearms.

assist the police department in regaining control of the city’s streets.

What does that even mean? Regain the streets from who? You can never regain the streets from the people that live there.

These people kill and attack each other even in prison,a which is tightly controlled environment with cameras and armed guards everywhere. A hand full of soldiers working as glorified babysitters isn't going to change a thing.

The only way to "regain control of the streets" is how our fore fathers asserted control in the first place. They drove the savages off the land and shot them if they came back.

Last summer I emailed Mayor Rhambo to deputize the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense (Bloomberg funded but based here in Indiana - a short drive away) and send them into the ‘hood along with ATF agents to clean out all the illegal guns.

No response.

So, they’re going to solve their ‘gun’ problem by bringing in more guns?!!

The police head honcho shares much of the blame. He is blaming all of this on how easy it is to get guns, wants more gun regulations. What’s new?

And then you have people in the hood crying that these kids have nothing to do, need jobs, need places to hang out.....
