Can I ask a stupid question?
How does this reconcile with the Real ID act, which is a federal law? That law called on states to take safeguards in verifying identities of people, that they are citizens, before issuing IDs such as driver’s licenses. The goal of the Real ID act was to ensure that only actual American citizens get an official government issued ID in this country.
Under the Real ID act, in the worst case, the federal government could declare that driver’s licenses from certain states will not be allowed to be used to board airplanes, or enter federal buildings. Could New York find that their IDs will no longer be considered legitimate for federal identification purposes?
