ATO Progress

On July 5, cities of Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, Kostyantynivka were taken by security forces. Or, more precisely, even not taken but – and that is especially alarming – were left by terrorists. Breach by militants that happened on July 4 from encircled Slovyansk to Kramatorsk with further access to Donetsk and Luhansk may indicate either the decision to leave the territory of Ukraine (this is for the reader to decide who made this decision) or move to more densely populated cities (because it becomes very hard for militants to make pictures with victims among civilians in devastated Slovyansk). The first option is the most desirable but…

Most likely that terrorists left “surprises” for ATO forces in the abandoned cities. For example, today in Slovyansk ATB market was blown up. Several defense islands of terrorists survived. This is why it is early to talk about the ultimate success yet.

The column of armor and cars of terrorists moved to Donetsk through uninhabited places and the column with more than a thousand militants were remaining an easy target for the ATO forces for at least two hours; why the ATO forces did not take the chance remains a mystery…

Analysis of movement of terrorists from Slovyansk indicates that their critical mass has accumulated in Donetsk. According to witnesses, militants massively settled student dormitories in Donetsk. At that there was information about preparation of provocations by terrorists in Luhansk under the guise of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the time this summary was being prepared, assault of the Donetsk airport began.

In addition, a number of questions regarding the Lysychansk-Siversk area arises. Today much attention was drawn to the movement of the column from Slovyansk. Judging by the fact that infantry fighting vehicles and NONAs of militants arrived to Luhansk from Slovyansk, we can expect a forthcoming breakthrough in the area of Izvaryne or on the pontoon bridge in Popivka. It is possible that terrorist acts will happen in the abandoned cities as a distracting operation. We strongly advise the residents to be extremely cautious.

It is alarming that Kremlin agents livened up in Kyiv. Eyewitnesses report that provocateurs in Kyiv are trying to stage stormy discussions as if there are no militants in Donbas and it is the local residents who fight. At that those specially trained agents appeal to the fact that they know the situation because they came from the East of Ukraine. However, those provocateurs fail to answer the clarifying questions and are beyond their depth at the territorial location of the cities and streets they refer to in their propaganda. On attempts to detain them and call the SBU they rapidly make off and change the place of agitation.

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS

Russia continues to express dissatisfaction with success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in carrying out the ATO. Because of that Russia suspended the handover of weapons and other military hardware seized along with Crimea to the Ukrainian armed forces. In this regard the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation circulated a note in which it explains this decision by “the continuing activities of the Ukrainian security forces in eastern Ukraine with the use of heavy weapons and warplanes resulting in deaths of peaceful civilians, including children”.

Europe, or to be more precise, France, once again demonstrated its attitude to the situation (recall François Hollande trying so hard to persuade Petro Poroshenko to extend the “truce”). In the person of Ambassador to the Russian Federation France stated the need to resolve the Ukrainian crisis in order to “bring back good relations with Russia”. Besides, it is proposed to simplify the visa procedures by cancelling short-term visa for Russian citizens and consider resumption of dialogue with Russia within the G8 format. Angela Merkel’s recent statements on readiness to strengthen the sanctions against Russia sound less believable against this background.

Latvia took much more clear position on the issue. A member of the European Parliament from Latvia stated that it is indecision and spinelessness of European politicians that can lead to a point when the conflict in Ukraine becomes smoldering and spread over many years (a modern example of such a conflict is Transnistria). And it is Russia that Latvia accused of victims in the East of Ukraine.

It is difficult to judge the official position of Hungary in relation to Ukraine but some political forces in the country use the situation to their own advantage. For example, a radical nationalist political party “The Movement for a Better Hungary” (“Jobbik”) advocates for the creation of an autonomy densely populated by ethnic Hungarians in the territory of Ukraine. Now, stating that the Ukrainian authorities “kill their citizens on a national basis”, the representatives of the party once again ask the Hungarian Parliament to support this initiative. Obviously for the “protection of ethnic Hungarians”. You can see that the card of “protection of their own people” has become quite popular in the geopolitical games of today.
