Provo High teacher accused of sexual abuse headed to trial

PROVO – A trial date has been set for a Provo High School teacher accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old student.

Donald Bills, 54, has been charged with one count of forcible sodomy and three counts of object rape, all first-degree felonies; and two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.

During a court hearing Thursday afternoon, a five-day trial was scheduled for December.

Bills was arrested and charged in January after he and the teen were interviewed.

Provo police said in January that someone viewed a text between Bills and the student and reported it to school officials, who contacted police. An investigation followed.

Police records indicate that in an interview with police at his home, Bills admitted to the relationship and told police he had engaged in sexual acts with the student on multiple occasions.

Bills waived his right to a preliminary hearing on the matter in May, choosing to proceed straight to trial.

Bills was initially put on administrative leave from Provo High, but Provo School District spokesman Caleb Price said in May that Bills is no longer with the school district.

Bills will be in court again Sept. 4 for a pretrial conference and will stand trial starting Dec. 1.
