I believe most receive a social security check.
That would be an earned benefit that was not optional.

I agree that people have been forced to contribute to this, and thus are entitled to something. I do take issue with the fact that 1) I’m being warned by my government that the funds coming out of my check today, while being given to current retirees, will not be available for my retirement (what do I owe them?), and 2) the same government (regardless of which head of the Republocrat hydra is in office) distorts inflation figures so that it doesn’t have to meet its true Social Security obligations.
I am maintaining a standard of living for current retirees that will not be reciprocated when I retire in a few decades; it is cold comfort that the government is offering legal avenues for older people to off themselves...
Nope. That money was already spent. If it had really been saved or invested, I would agree, but the governments elected by those now receiving social security didn’t do that. Therefore Scial Security is just another government giveaway.
More of a ponzi scheme that will soon implode.
SSI disability. Have a kid w/ ADD? Collect a check. Are you an alcoholic or drug addict? Collect a check. Do you have anxiety issues? Collect a check.
Meanwhile, I know a few who have worked their entire lives that have true physical disabilities that are getting denied.
I might challenge the term "earned benefit" when the money was taken from me and I could have invested and received a much better return....but your point is understood.
I agree. We PAID into that “entitlement”. Plus, Uncle Sam TAKES that out of your check. You have no “opt out”. Your employer takes your part out and sends it to the gov-mint. You cannot stop it.
SS represents an unfunded liability of close to $40 trillion. It is a pay as you go program where today's workers pay for today's retirees. It has been running in the red since 2010. In order to make up the shortfall and pay full benefits, the General Fund must redeem the non-market, interest bearing T-bills in the SS Trust Fund. Since 40% of the General Fund is from borrowed money, we are borrowing money to pay for SS.
Doesn’t matter how it came about, it matter that SSI recipients wouldn’t want it canceled. SSI recipients would vote for the devil if it meant keeping that money.
I find the more one is given a check by the govt the more one tends to keep voting for that govt.....thus, the handouts but elections....
And about 4 million receive military or railroad retirement board pensions. I wouldn't include those in with the takers as well.
- Social Security is not a government benefit -
. . . It is a mandatory Pansy Scam to fund corrupt government politicians-insiders and government employee’s paychecks and employee’s pensions that is taken at gunpoint and returns only a tiny fraction of what a legitimate private investment would return -
- Eventually it will fail because American citizens will go the General Electric/Pelosi way and not allow the government to “help them”
Which is still a constituency for “More”.
“I believe most receive a social security check. That would be an earned benefit that was not optional.”
My social security check is NOT a gov’t handout. I earned it, I paid for it. And my employers matched what I paid.
Let’s start over and let me put all that money into an ‘annuity’ or other means of compounding the interest on the money. And that was through some high interest rate times. I could have the income I have now and have a healthy principle to pass on to my heirs.
The fact that the gov’t has squandered the money I and my employers paid into social security is a part of the leftist monetary failings. That does not make social security payments to me a gov’t handout!
You’re right. Social Security is an earned benefit. All of us would be more than happy to have them re-figure contributions and give us our money back plus 6% compound interest.
