FREMONT -- Tesla Motors, which is on a mission to bring electric cars to the masses, now has another goal -- to become a leading employer of America's military veterans. "We want to be known throughout the veteran community as a great place to work," Arnnon Geshuri, Tesla's vice president of human resources, said in an interview. "Veterans are a great source of talent for Tesla, and we're going after it." "Tesla has risen to the top" among companies known for creating veteran-friendly workplaces, said Ted Daywalt, president and CEO of VetJobs, the nation's leading military job board. "They have a good reputation. They hire veterans who can talk to other veterans. There is a language in the military, and having someone who can speak the lingo is important." Veterans are a good fit for Tesla because many gained advanced technical, electrical and mechanical skills while serving in the military -- skills applicable to making electric cars. They are also accustomed to working as part of tightly-knit groups. Greg Reichow, Tesla's vice president of production, says the company is eager to hire veterans because they've found them to be excellent employees who share the company's sense of mission.

There are no battery problems.
Unless you are talking about battery shortages because Panasonic can’t supply Tesla with all the batteries they need.
Tesla will open their new battery factory within 3 years hiring an additional 6500 Americans, many of them veterans.
BTW Tesla CEO has repeatedly said the 3rd Gen Compact Sedan will start at ~$35k.

A)1)It is a fully private company. 2) it suckles less at the government teat than any other auto company, forgoing the teat completely puts it at competitive disadvantage.
B) 1)No form of transportation is pollution free but electrics having massively reduced pollution vs conventional cars 2)electric cars are a massive advance for American Energy independence.

Yossarian meant private as in not government owned or government owned by proxy because it depends on government funds to remain afloat.
In that sense it is private. Of course I know publicly traded stock company. TSLA closed at $229 with a market cap of $28.45 Billion. I own a few shares myself.

- Tesla depended on a government loan, not private investment, to build their business (aka crony capitalism);
- Tesla gets huge taxpayer subsidies for their cars because they are supposedly environmentally good (when they aren’t) (aka crony capitalism); and
- Tesla actually makes their so-called “profits” off of carbon credit trading (aka crony capitalism).

Yossarian you are misinformed or disingenuous.
1) Tesla has raised over $4B in private capital. $2.3B this March. Almost all from professional institutional investors not individual Ed Baigley Jr types. Tesla did receive a $459 DOE loan in 2008 that it used to accelerate its growth and paid it back in full with interest 1Q 2013. As opposed to FR posterboy Ford that received a $5.9 Billion dollar loan from the DOE and plans to repay it over 25 years. Every automaker suckles at the government teat at far greater rate than Tesla.
2)Every car maker receives the same Federal and state subsidies for zero emission vehicles. The Federal grant was in place before Tesla incorporated. Their cars are “environmentally good” to say any different is willful ignorance.
Unlike Ford, GM, et al it has not received grants for fuel cell or battery research from the Feds. Nor has it asked nor received monies to build its recharging network. All the big auto companies have asked and received monies to build a “hydrogen highway.” Which if you understand basic science is a massive waste of money.
If all oil exploration restrictions were lifted the USA would be able to be energy independent using oil based transportation for maybe 10 years. If we got really lucky maybe 20 years. Using electric vehicles we could be energy independent forever.
3)Tesla makes over 25% margins on the Model S with an average selling price of over $106k. The carbon credits are very small icing on the Model S cake. The buyers of Tesla credits, which they have not sold the last two quarters, can choose to make zero emission vehicles,buy credits, or not do business in CA. They choose to buy carbon credits. This system was lobbied for by the largest 8 automotive OEMs before Tesla sold its first Model S.
