The Secretary of State only receives certified results from the party in order to prepare the General Election ballot.

That's bunk.

The election law didn't just materialize out of nowhere on its own. It was crafted by the legislature, adjudicate by the judiciary, and executed by the Executive. All the arms of Mississippi government are involved in the faithful execution of the laws that they put in place.

Sure, the parties themselves have the responsibility of reporting their results, but it's the state that has the criminal oversight responsibility to ensure that the election is conduct in a fair and legal manner.

This statement by the Secretary of State sounds like they are washing their hands of it and walking away from their oversight responsibility, because they know that it means the end of Thad Cochran and Haley Barbour.

You’d think the SOS would have some say so over party primaries, but I’m not a lawyer
so I have no idea what their laws/constitution requires.

I don't think they stated it well (they said more than they needed to), but the meat of the remark is that certification of primary results is a function of a political party, and not a function of the Seretary of State. That's true, it's what the election code says.
