SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Workers are preparing to enter one of the most dangerous rooms on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation the site of a 1976 blast that exposed a technician to a massive dose of radiation, leading to him being nicknamed the "Atomic Man."
Harold McCluskey was working in the room when a chemical reaction caused a glass glove box to explode. He was exposed to the highest dose of radiation from the chemical element americium ever recorded 500 times the occupational standard.
Hanford, located in central Washington state, made plutonium for nuclear weapons for decades. The room was used to recover radioactive americium, a byproduct of plutonium.
McCluskey, then 64, was placed in isolation in a decontamination facility for five months. Within a year, his body's radiation count had fallen by about 80 percent and he was allowed to return home.

Doctor Manhattan, I presume?
Harold R. McCluskey died 11 years later at the age of 75 of coronary artery disease.
What THEY don’t tell you is that the Dust Bunnies in the room became sentient and are mutating.
Being irradiated can’t be a good thing but is as scary as the gov says? personally I don’t believe anything the gov says anymore. Too many people with too many agendas
Look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki today and you will have your answer.
Hormesis is a real phenomenon. At low doses, radiation can be beneficial and can reduce the chance of cancer.
This is true, but not a popular thing to say. The PC approach is to say all radiation is bad all the time.
Radiation can certainly kill. That’s why we build thermonuclear weapons. But there should be nothing wrong with stating that radiation can also prevent disease.
After all, this guy lived 11 more years, did not die of cancer, but just fell victim to coronary artery disease.
I drive by there all the time.
I think if you start out, by assuming everything the government tells you is a lie, until you can verify it, you are in safe territory. If the government tells me the sky is blue, I am going outside to check for myself.
Too bad the radiation did not cure that coronary artery disease.....
Site (old Plutonium Finishing Plant) is about 20 miles from me.
Yep, they were left as "Glow in the Dark" wastlands, toxic to all living things that came within a dozen miles! They will remain so for centuries!

They had to take the roof off the building to get the 3rd man out because he was impaled on the fuel rod assembly which was stuck in the roof.
I’m guessing that they don’t ship in much new plutonium. Do you have a ‘glow’?
