Mace is probably illegal in many of these "blue" states anyway.

A better (legal) choice is a can of hornet spray and a lighter. The hornet spray is designed to spray a nest from 20-30 feet away with a long, narrow stream. Hold a lighter in front of it, and you've got the most fearsome weapon any of those quasi-humanoid mutants have ever seen. There's something very primal and horrific about setting an animal like that on fire, I'd say.
