121 people will be out of a job after Alpha Natural Resources closes one of its mines.
Alpha told News 5 WCYB the Cherokee Mine near Haysi, Virginia is at the end of its life. 66 miners will be officially laid off in 60 days.
55 others will continue to work, removing equipment and infrastructure and buttoning up the mine, which should take until September.
The mine opened in 1997 and became part of Dickenson-Russell Coal Company and Alpha in 2002.
The company says the mine closure is a result of continued adverse market conditions and the high cost of running the mine.
Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-9) released this statement about the closing of the mine:
"I am saddened by todays news that yet another mine in Virginias Ninth Congressional District is slated for closure. Hardworking Americans, their families, and our communities need the jobs that these mines provide. For those individuals impacted, please contact my Abingdon or Christiansburg office for possible assistance and to receive a resource packet."
I wonder if any of these guys are going to have to do without a nanny now. Maybe Obama can go to West Virginia to meet with these “ordinary folks” and explain how he’s on their side.
I have a closed mine on my property. After a while, they just give out.
The fault lies squarely witth the Republican lead House of unRepresenatives. They control the purse strings. All they had to do was cut some of the EPA budget and a lot of Obama’s walking around money. Instead, we get hearings that are all sounds and furies and nothing else.
King Obama is focused like a laser on jobs.Look how many he's killed !!!
