Do the Chinese ever allow our ships to ‘show the flag’ in their ports?

US warships have visited Shanghai within the last ten years.

When I was in the US Navy (1988-1992), we had a few Russian ships stop off at 32nd Street (San Diego, 1990). I was living at NAB Coronado, and had seen MANY of them on base. They had a picnic/BBQ across Silver Strand (by SEAL training). I met a few of them in passing (McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.) and managed to trade a base ballcap for a pair of LCDR equivalent shoulder-boards. Still have them.

Wanted to go on a tour while they were in port at 32nd Street, but my OIC “suggested” us not to go (I was a CTT3 working at NSGD/NCTS/NRRF Imperial Beach). Always regret not going. Would have been cool to see what I could scope out.
