Report: Diplomatic Facilities (Like in Benghazi) Suffer From Poor, Dated Standards

A subset of diplomatic facilities similar to the one that came under attack in Benghazi, Libya, suffers from absent, outdated or inconsistent security standards, a Government Accountability Office report released Wednesday determines.

The public version of the “sensitive but unclassified” report doesn’t name which 10 high-risk, geographically diverse posts were part of its survey.

Among the report’s findings were “some facility types for which standards were lacking or unclear, instances in which the standards were not updated in a timely manner, and inconsistencies within the standards.”

For example, “State’s process for updating physical security standards is not timely. In some instances, State and OSPB [Overseas Security Policy Board] have taken over 8 years to update standards, which may leave some facilities more vulnerable in the interim.”

Benghazi was not a Embassy or a Consulate, it was a Mission house.

We did not and do not own the property.

We were and are renters. Not likely that we will get our damage deposit back.

Mission houses are a diplomatic facility of sorts but are not intended for physical security and never belong in contested areas. Their business is to promote business, assist NGO’s, hand out money, etc.

Benghazi was an unintendedly designed disaster waiting to happen.

Not this Mission and not all diplomatic missions just " promote business, assist NGO’s, hand out money."

Promoting trade and business and supporting NGO’s is the largest purpose of Mission houses. They are also a cover for CIA and State personnel.

I didn’t say “just” and limit myself to the purposes of Mission houses, don’t recharacterize my comments to fit your negative opinion.

Please tell us what you think Mission houses do.
